The Zambia Revenue Authority -ZRA- has impounded a South African Truck laden with undervalued assorted alcoholic beverages.
The consignment would have caused Government to lose about One million Kwacha in taxes.
ZRA Corporate Communications Manager OLIVER NZALA says the importer presented documents that showed that the goods were valued at about 774 thousand Kwacha when in fact NOT.
Mr. NZALA says the authority used its intelligence systems and counterchecked details from the originating country which showed that the goods were valued at K1.8 million.
He says ZRA will do an assessment and slap the importer penalties together with the correct taxes.
Mr. NZALA adds that if the importer fails to comply within 14-days, the authority will institute seizure and forfeiture procedures.
He has since called on importers to make the correct declarations and be tax compliant as the authority does NOT pride in taking punitive measures which take away from its mandate of facilitating trade.
Mr. NZALA said this in Lusaka today when he addressed Journalists shortly after inspecting the impounded Truck at the ZRA Makeni Yard.
