The Zambia Correctional Service will soon partner with the Cotton Association of Zambia to boost cotton production in correctional facilities.
The two entities will in the next few days sign a Memorandum of Understanding that will ensure more production of cotton as the Cotton Association of Zambia will provide expertise in adding value to the product.
And Home Affairs Minister Stephen Kampyongo has directed the service to expedite the paperwork to ensure the partnership comes to fruition.
Mr. Kampyongo says once the partnership works out, it will not only create employment within and outside the service but also cut costs of procuring uniforms for men and women in the service.
Speaking when the Cotton Association of Zambia made a presentation to Zambia Correctional Service in Kabwe, Mr. Kampyongo said the initiative will also help empower inmates before they are integrated into society.
And Zambia Correction Service Commissioner General Chisela Chileshe said the service will seize the opportunity by increasing cotton production in all the facilities.
Meanwhile, Cotton Association of Zambia Executive Director Joseph Nkole said value addition to cotton is the only way the country will be able to attract foreign exchange while creating more jobs for the locals.
