ukwimi-farmers-face-critical-water-shortage-~

About 500 people in Ukwimi Farming Resettlement area in Lusangazi District are facing a critical shortage of safe drinking water forcing them to draw water from shallow wells.

ZANIS reports that the water situation has been compounded by the drying-up of the only borehole in the area that was drilled in 2000.

One of the residents, 70-year-old RACHEL ZULU said people wake up as early as 04:00 hours to fetch water from the shallow wells in a dambo area where animals also drink from.

Ms ZULU said this when Lusangazi Council Chairperson, BLACKSON TEMBO, visited the water point to appreciate challenges people were facing in accessing clean and safe drinking water.

He assured the community that the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) could be used to attend to the water problem.
