The Governance, Elections, Advocacy Research Services -GEARS- initiative says the 30 Patriotic Front Members of Parliament who were slapped with a 30 days suspension from Parliament are lucky with the simple punishment imposed on them because the offence they committed attracts severe punishment.
Yesterday, 30 PF MPs were suspended from Parliament for protesting in front of the Speaker’s mace after a ruling on 2 points of orders from Local Government and Rural Development Minister Garry Nkombo and his Justice counterpart Mulambo Haimbe over the MPs conduct, which they have resolved to take legal action against the Speaker.
GEARS Executive Director Macdonald Chipenzi says the Speaker of the National Assembly’s decision was grounded within the law, in accordance with section 19 of the privileges act adding that the 30 days suspension is simple because according to the act, any offence of obstruction attracts a 6 months imprisonment.
In an interview, Mr. Chipenzi has since urged the MPs to acquaint themselves with laws that govern them when in the house further stating that their decision to take legal action against the speaker’s ruling is weak as no law was broken or infringement on the affected MPs rights.
