A 30-year-old man of Senanga District has died after he was attacked by a Hippo on the Zambezi River.

Deputy Police Public Relations Officer DANNY MWALE has identified the deceased as MUBITA KUYAWA.

Mr. MWALE says the deceased’s canoe was hit by a Hippo while he was removing fishing nets from the river after which it attacked him when he fell into the water.

He says MUBITA sustained deep wounds on his body after being rescued by other fishermen who rushed him to Senanga General Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Mr. MWALE says the incident happened yesterday around 07:30 hours in Kalongola area.

He says the body of the deceased was deposited in the same Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem and burial.

And Mr. MWALE says police in Western Province have charged and arrested a 42-year-old man of Muoyo area for the offence of Attempted Murder.

He says the suspected identified as LUKONGE KASHWEKA while armed with a machete attempted to kill 94 year old BENSON MUBINGA of Namalumba village in Nalolo District.

Mr. MWALE says the old man over-powered and managed to disarm the suspect and quickly alerted Police officers who arrested and detained him.

He says the suspect is in custody waiting for court appearance.

Mr. MWALE has told ZNBC News in a statement that the incident happened yesterday around 07:00 hours at Namalumba village while the motive behind the attempt murder is yet to be established.
