A scientist has called for more investment in laboratory infrastructure and equipment in the African region.
Zambia National Public Health Institute – ZNPHI Public Health Laboratory Specialist Otridah Kapona says this will help strengthen the region’s preparedness and response to public health threats.
Ms KAPONA was speaking in an interview with ZNBC news in Dakar, Senegal shortly after Health experts from selected countries toured Institut Pasteur Laboratory.
She explained that the laboratory plays a critical role in supporting clinicians in the management of patients and optimizing the use of antimicrobial medicines.
Ms KAPONA said without laboratory confirmation, treatment of patients does not always target the germs causing disease.
She said this leads to extensive antimicrobial resistance.
And speaking during the tour, Institut Pasteur de Dakar Director Biomedical Research XAVIER BERTHET said the laboratory is looking at ways of developing medicines, which can be used to treat infections caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites.
