Home Affairs and Interior Security Minister JACK MWIIMBU says most correctional facilities in the country are in a deplorable state and require urgent rehabilitation.
The minister says the facilities are also congested with over 26,000 inmates occupying space originally designed for 10,000 individuals.
Mr MWIIMBU has called for donor support towards the rehabilitation of the infrastructure.
He said this in LUSAKA today during the Joint Launch of Prisons and Correctional Centres ‘ 2023 Audit Report.
The report was developed by officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Ministry of Justice, European Union -EU in collaboration with local and international civil society organisations involved in criminal Justice advocacy.
And, Justice Minister MULAMBO HAIMBE said the Presidential Pardon of 45 female inmates with circumstantial children demonstrates the Government’s commitment to fair administration of criminal justice.
Meanwhile Germany Ambassador to ZAMBIA ANNE WAGNER -MITCHEL said circumstantial children in Correctional Facilities need proper care.
Mrs.WAGNER -MITCHEL stressed Germany’s commitment to support Zambia’s efforts to improve the state of Correctional Facilities in the country.
