Director of Public Prosecutions -DPP- GILBERT PHIRI has rejected Socialist Party President FRED M’MEMBE’s bid to prosecute Inspector General of Police GRAPHEL MUSAMBA for defamation.

Mr. PHIRI says he could not grant Dr. M’MEMBE’s application due to public interest considerations.

This is according to Mr. PHIRI’s response in a letter addressed to Dr. M’MEMBE and accessed by ZNBC News in LUSAKA today.

Earlier today the Inspector General of Police appeared before LUSAKA Resident Magistrate CHRISPIN HAMPUNGANI in a matter where he is accused of defaming Dr. M’MEMBE.

However Mr. MUSAMBA could not take plea as the DPP was yet to issue instructions to prosecute the matter.

Magistrate HAMPUNGANI adjourned the matter to Friday for mention.
