The Ministry of Green Economy and Environment has seized over eighteen thousand 50-kilogram bags of charcoal which were found hidden at Ferro Alloy Corporation Limited in Kabwe.
The charcoal which is valued at over 750 thousand Kwacha has been seized pending court processes.
And Green Economy and Environment Minister COLLINS NZOVU, who was on a site visit at the manganese processing plant, is disappointed that Zambia Environmental Management Agency -ZEMA- officers failed to find the charcoal at the firm during their inspections.
Mr. NZOVU also wondered why Ferro Alloy Corporation Limited was disposing waste material directly into the ground instead of storing it in specially lined ponds as demanded by the law.
The Minister said the UPND government has given maximum support to ZEMA and expects nothing short of good work.
And Ferro Alloy Corporation Limited Operations Manager MANASH SENGUPTA failed to explain why the company was using charcoal and polluting the ground and the air contrary to the agreement with ZEMA.
