Justice Minister MULAMBO HAIMBE says there is nothing sinister about the compensation of the five UPND members who were arrested and prosecuted for a charge of treason in 2017.
Mr. HAIMBE says the case of the five complainants was novel and warranted appropriate treatment in view of the seriousness of the complaint and the novelty of the situation.
The Minister said this at a press briefing held in Livingstone in response to stories in the media concerning the compensation.
Mr. HAIMBE said the action is not new and is in line with legal provisions of the land.
The Minister added that compensating people that are falsely imprisoned and unlawfully prosecuted with what may seem to be very high awards is meant to serve as a deterrent against similar misconduct in the future.
