The Ministry of Health has expressed concern on the rising number of new HIV cases among adolescents and young people in Zambia.

Health Minister, SYLVIA MASEBO says the 2022 HIV statistics indicate a rising number of new HIV infections among individuals aged 15 to 35.

Ms. MASEBO explains that the statistics also indicate that 50 percent of new infections occurred among young people accounting for an estimated 14,000 to 17,000 new infections annually.

She says among the factors contributing to this increase include inadequate uptake of preventive interventions.

Ms. MASEBO was speaking during the pre-launch of the 2023 National HIV Testing, Counselling and Treatment day in Lusaka.

She added that it is disturbing that 35 percent of new HIV infections among infants result from infections in pregnant and breastfeeding women.
