Government has allowed Meta Alloy Zambia Limited of Luanshya to resume production of Ferro Silica, after the company met conditions to produce charcoal in a sustainable manner at its farms.

The company, which sent 700 workers on forced leave last month, has been granted permission to resume operations after showing capacity to produce charcoal sustainably on its 400 hectare farms in MPONGWE District.

Green Economy and Environment Minister COLLINS NZOVU announced the development after inspecting the plant and farms today.

Mr. NZOVU said his team is satisfied that Meta Alloy Zambia Limited has demonstrated capacity to produce its charcoal at the three farms it operates in MPONGWE District.

He warned of serious consequences should the company resort to buying charcoal instead of producing it on its own.

And LUANSHYA Member of Parliament LUSALE SIMBAO cautioned Méta Alloy against abrogating the environmental laws and that the company should Not buy charcoal from outsiders.

Green Economy and Environment Permanent Secretary DOUTY CHIBAMBA said the firm has met conditions to produce its own charcoal.

And Meta Alloys Zambia Limited Chief Executive Officer SOMNATH AHUJA pledged to abide by the law.

META Alloy Zambia on 1st September sent hundreds of workers home after it ran out of charcoal, a raw material used in producing Ferro silica.
