The Rural Electrification Authority REA has signed Memoranda of Understanding MOUs with four constituencies in Southern Province to enhance electricity coverage.
The four being, Mazabuka Central, Magoye, Siavonga and Kazungula constituencies brings the total number of MOUs signed with various constituencies across the country to 40.
REA Chief Executive Officer LINUS CHANDA says each constituency will contribute one million Kwacha for the project but REA will supplement with the 743 million Kwacha that the government gave the authority for 2023 projects.
Mr CHANDA says the project will ensure implementation of priority rural electrification projects under the rural electrification master plan sites in the Constituencies.
He has since urged other Constituencies to come on board to quicken the process of taking electricity to rural areas.
And Southern Province Local Government Officer CHARLESTON HAMULYATA said the taking of electricity to rural areas will promote industrialization in rural areas thereby creating jobs.
He said the government’s desire is to ensure that all Zambians have access to electricity to enhance development.
And Mazabuka Deputy Mayor SAUL MWIINGA said the MOUs are an important step towards improving energy access to communities.
