Cabinet has granted treasury authority to the immigration department for the recruitment of 250 officers before the end of the year.

Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister JACK MWIIMBU says this is in an effort to curb illegal immigrants, human and drug trafficking.

Mr. MWIIMBU says the creation of border guards is aimed at strengthening national security, promoting trade facilitation and safe human mobility.

He says he will continue lobbying for more manpower and other resources essential in ensuring operations are optimum and meet the expectations of citizens.

Mr. MWIIMBU was speaking during the pass out parade for the first ever border guards at the GEOFFREY MUKUMA Paramilitary training school.

Meanwhile, Department of Immigration Director General JAPHET LISHOMWA directed the officers to change the narrative that Zambia’s 5 thousand 6 hundred kilometers border line is porous.

And, GEOFFREY MUKUMA Police training College Divisional Commander YOBE LUHANA advised the officers to work hand in hand with colleagues from other security wings because they are serving the same citizens.
