Mining expert Edward Simukonda has urged government to be cautious as it chats the way forward with GLENCORE, the owners of Mopani Copper Mines following the move by the mining firm to rescind its decision to place its Kitwe and Mufulira mines on care and maintenance.
Glencore has informed government that it is ready to dialogue as opposed to proceeding with the planned three months long care and maintenance undertaking that was invoked last week.
But Mr. Simukonda says despite the move being welcome, government should be careful in its future engagements with Mopani Copper Mines looking at the behavior the mining company has exhibited in the last few days.
Mopani Copper Mines was last week placed under care and maintenance by its parent company Glencore despite government’s disapproval and in the process sending over 15,000 workers under direct employment and under several contractors on forced leave.
