The Ministry of Agriculture has advised farmers to consider planting drought and army worm tolerant maize seed varieties in the 2023-2024 farming season.
This follows the announcement by the Zambia Meteorological Department that the country is likely to experience reduced rainfall in the 2023-2024 rainy seasons.
Chongwe District Senior Agricultural Officer FRANCIS KUBI says various seed companies are promoting the Army worm and drought tolerant maize seed varieties which can be accessed in genuine agro dealer shops.
Mr KUBI emphasized that Army Worm infestations and droughts have continued to be a major drawback for farmers’ productivity in Zambia.
He says there is need for farmers to have access to drought tolerant seed and appropriate technologies to increase their climate resilience and guarantee household food security.
Mr KUBI said this during a Seed Fair in Chongwe which was held under the theme, ”promoting access to drought tolerant seed and appropriate scale technologies”.
