By Gloria Siwisha – FISHERIES and Livestock minister Professor Nkandu Luo has handed over 1,520 improved village chickens and 209 goats to 19 women’s groups in Lumezi district of Eastern Province.
Professor Luo says the livestock stocking and res-tocking exercise is part of the Enhanced Smallholder Livestock Investment Program (E-SLIP) which is meant to improve the incomes, and nutrition status of poor households countrywide.
Professor Luo says Government has put livestock development on top of its agenda as it is critical in creating wealth and alleviating the sufferings of rural communities.
Professor Luo has urged beneficiaries to share the livestock once it multiplies since it has been given in a pass -on-the- gift arrangement.
Meanwhile, chiefteness Mwanya of Lumezi district thanked Government for the gesture saying it would go a long way in alleviating the hardships of the people in her chiefdom.
E-SLIP is a seven year Government program which is being implemented with support from OPEC and the International Fund for Agricultural Development(IFAD).
The project’s small livestock sub-component, is targeting to benefit 28,000 poor small households, 50 percent who should be women, 30 percent rural youths, and 20 percent men.
