“coups-are-a-result-of-failed-democractic-institutions”-~

Former Sierra Leonean President ERNEST BAI KOROMA says there is a need to interrogate and understand the reasons why military officers are mounting coups across Africa.

Dr. KOROMA says the coups are a result of the failure of democratic institutions or democratically elected leaders to satisfy the needs of the people.

Speaking when he paid a courtesy call on Vice President MUTALE NALUMANGO at her office in Lusaka, Dr. KOROMA said once the reasons for military coups are understood, it will be easy for democratically elected leaders to work for the people.

He said Africa has made a lot of progress in entrenching democracy on the continent but the military coups are taking the efforts back.

And Mrs. NALUMANGO said the military coups being mounted especially in West Africa are a shame.

Mrs. NALUMANGO said there is a need to work towards having stability on the continent in a democratic environment.

She asked Dr. KOROMA to use his influence to inspire the young generation to believe in democracy.
