Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo has accused some law enforcement officers of conniving with traders to smuggle mealie-meal into the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo-DRC.
Following the increase of smuggling cases that were reported early this year, Mr. Matambo in a bid to curb the vice formed an anti-smuggling task force comprising of various security wings and members of the public.
But addressing the media at his office this morning, Mr. Matambo expressed disappointment that some officers who should be ensuring that smuggling of mealie-meal into the neighboring DRC is curbed have been compromised and are now conniving with smugglers.
Mr. Matambo has however has assured that his office in collaboration with the security wings in the province have reinforced security measures in border towns as well as border posts to curb the vice and that investigations will be instituted to remove corrupt officers.
He has since appealed to members of the public especially in Mufulira, Chillambowe and Chiwala area of Masaiti to be on high alert and report any suspicious activities to their nearest police post.
