By Joy Siatubi-Zambia’s medal hopeful in boxing at the ongoing All Africa games, Benny Muziyo has been eliminated from the competition.
Muziyo, a 2015 All Africa games bronze medalist, lost to David Semuju of Uganda in the 75 kilogram middleweight category last evening, on a 3-2 split points decision.
And Ben Banda has also been eliminated from the competition in the preliminaries.
Banda narrowly lost on a 3-2 split points decision to Tony Heriniana of Madagascar in the 52 kg flyweight category.
Zambia’s hopes now lie in Mbachi Kaonga who has already qualified to the quarter finals, as well as Evaristo Mulenga and Nkumbu Silungwe.
Mbachi outclassed Kenya’s Eedwin Okongo on a 5-0 unanimous points decision in the 81 kilogram light heavyweight category.
He is scheduled to meet Samed Shakul of Ghana in the quarter finals on Sunday.
And Evaristo Mulenga could also qualify to the quarter finals, if he beats Tunisia’s Mhamdi Bilel on Saturday.
Mulenga yesterday overcame Marco Jerome of Madagascar on a 5-0 unanimous points decision in the 57 kilogram featherweight challenge.
Today’s fight will see Nkumbu Silungwe back in the ring as he competes for a place in the quarter finals.
Silungwe faces Lesotho’s Mosheshoe Mokhachane in the 69 kilogram welterweight category, after beating Bwogi Shadiri of Uganda in yesterday’s preliminaries.
ZNBC managed to catch the action between Silungwe and Shadiri yesterday.
