The construction of the 54 million-dollars road project in Kazungula district has been halted by unknown people, in Nyawa Chiefdom, who have burnt a water pump, used by the contractor.

The water pumping equipment worth 12,000 Dollars was set ablaze on Wednesday July 19, 2023.

Katombora Member of Parliament, CLEMENT ANDELEKI, who has visited the site and inspected the torched equipment, is disappointed with the action he describes as barbaric and criminal.

Mr. ANDELEKI has since directed the police in Zimba and Kazungula district to work together and arrest the culprits within forty-eight hours.

He says besides the road, the multi-million-dollars project which is funded by the government with help from the World Bank, has a component of rural electrification and a three-point-five-million Kwacha for community projects such as borehole drilling.

Chief NYAWA, who was also on the scene, has  called for the immediate arrest of the perpetrators.

Chief NYAWA told ZNBC News in an interview that he is disappointed with action taken by his subjects to cripple a public project meant to open up the area for development.

Meanwhile, Nyawa Ward Councillor AUBREY MWAAMVWA, alleges the setting ablaze of the water pumping machine to have been done by some people who were opposed to the contractor drawing water from Bunsanga dam.

Mr. MWAAMVWA says despite several community engagements, some residents opposed the drawing of water for road construction on fears that the dam will dry, and their animals will have no water to drink.

FOSTER MWANZA, who is the Project Engineer for the road, stretching from Zimba to Kalomo district, said the water challenge has adversely affected construction works.
