Chiyangi Happy With COSAFA Squad Progress, Welcomes CHAN Draw

Aggrey Chiyangi

Chipolopolo stand-in coach Aggrey Chiyangi says the Cosafa squad has made tremendous progress in the last two weeks that they have been training on three-day weekly camps in Lusaka.

And Chiyangi says being drawn against Botswana in the final qualifying round of the Cameroon 2020 African Nations Championship (CHAN) is welcome but calls for adequate preparations.

Speaking after the Tuesday morning workout, Chiyangi said he would have loved to add some under-23 players after their assignment was pushed to September but the provisional list had already been submitted to the Cosafa secretariat.

“The response is very positive, everyone is pushing very hard and the competition in the team is very high and that is what we want. We really want them to compete so that as we go there, they are going to be ready to compete,” said the 2018 Zambian Coach of the Year.

Zambia are four-time winners of the COSAFA Cup but have been to 10 finals in all. Their previous title was in 2013 on home soil.

Zambia will join the Cosafa championship at the quarterfinal stage with a match against Group B winner.

Group B comprises Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles and Malawi.

Chipolopolo won both first two editions of the COSAFA Cup in 1997 and 1998, but it took until 2006 for them to claim their third regional title.
